Krystal Welsh Wins Maryland Classic
On January 13-14th, 2007 the teams from Docksiders Gymnastics competed in the Maryland Classic. The competition was held at the PG Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland and boasted many top gymnasts from across the US. The level 9 and Level 10/Open optional competitions also included finals for each event and individual event champions were crowned after an exciting second day of competition between the top athletes on each event. Docksiders’ Level 10 team took a 2nd place in the team competition where Docksider Krystal Welsh put together an awesome performance which earned her the title of Level 10/Open All-Around Champion with the score 37.125. In the Level 9 Competition a stand out performance by Docksider Katie Plummer is not to be overlooked. Coming back from a back injury that kept her out of competition all last season Katie earned a double win on vault. She won the preliminary round of vault with a 9.20, and came back to win the Finals as well with a 9.40. She was the only Docksider to outscore the competition on both days of the competition.
Krystal Welsh, who was competing in the Level 10 Jr. A division, also earned the titles of Vault Champion, with a score of 9.625, and Floor Champion, with a 9.50, and earned 3rd place on the Uneven Bars with a score of 9.20. Several other Docksiders also competed in the Level 10 Jr. A division. Courtney Shelsby was the Uneven Bars Champion with a score of 9.325 and also placed 2nd in the All-Around with a 36.60. Brianna Guy placed 2nd on Vault with a 9.475 and 3rd All-Around scoring just a few tenths behind her teammates with a score of 36.525. Alexis Gross put in a solid performance on balance beam and took home the 2nd place award with a 9.10. In the Jr. B age division Rachel Fincham placed 2nd on balance beam with a 9.10 and 3rd All-Around with a 36.425. Competing in the Senior B age division Lilly Siems also put together a no fall beam routine which scored an 8.90 to earn her 3rd place. All of the girls who took top placements in the Preliminary Competition earned a spot in the Finals Competition which was held on Sunday where the top 8 Junior and Senior places battled for a second chance at awards. Completing the Docksiders Level 10 Team were Heather Atwood, Melanie Brother, Toi Garcia, Betsy Zander, and Sarah Meiklejohn, who sustained an injury on the second rotation and had to pull out of the competition.
In the Level 9 Senior A competition Katie Plummer placed 3rd All-Around with a score of 35.70 and 3rd on uneven bars with a 9.10. This was in addition to her double Vault win. Docksider Katie Carroll, who also competed in the Senior A competition, took home 2nd place on Floor Exercise with a score of 9.30. Also competing for the Level 9 team were Kayla Della, Monica Durham, Chelsie Rosborough, and Jenna White. Amanda Castle had to scratch from the meet due to an injury sustained in practice the week before.
The Finals highlights included several top finishes by Docksiders Gymnasts. Toi Garcia placed 2nd on Vault in the Level 10/Open competition with a dynamic performance that earned her a 9.775. Rachel Fincham held on to her 2nd place finish on uneven bars with the high score of 9.475. Katie Carroll also stunned the crowds with her Floor Exercise routine to a Madonna Mix earning a score of 9.575 and keeping 2nd place honors. Katie Plummer became the Over All Vault Champion with her 9.40 score in Finals. Congratulations to all!
