Docksiders Leah Dunn Takes the Big Prize
at the Level 8 State Championships!
Docksiders Level 8 Team competed in the Maryland Level 8 State Championships on April 4, 2009. Leah Dunn had a standout performance for the Docksiders Team that she will not soon forget! She earned the title of Maryland State All-Around Champion with the score 36.80. This was her second State All-Around win, she was the Level 4 State All-Around Champion in 2005.
Leah is 11 years old and
goes to Severn Run Middle School. She is a Principal’s Honor Student
and is in the 6th grade. She began competing in gymnastics
while attending Barlow’s Gymnastics when she was just 6 years old.
After making a switch to Docksiders Gymnastics, Anne
Arundel
County’s premier competitive gymnastics program, she has really begun to
soar. Docksiders Gymnastics has produced more national level and
collegiate scholarship recipients than all other clubs in Anne Arundel,
Prince George’s, and Howard County combined. Leah has won several
All-Around titles this season including those at the Winter Island Get
Away Invitational and the Unique Classic. Leah loves gymnastics and
says her favorite event is Uneven Bars, though she does not seem to have
a weak event. Her new floor routine has fast become a favorite around
the gym, as she dances and tumbles to the tune “Life is a Highway” by
the popular group Rascal Flatts. Leah added State Vault Champion, with
a score of 9.30, and State Bar Champion with high swinging score of
9.625 to her long list of titles. She also placed 3rd on
Floor Exercise with a 9.225. Leah was also honored with the title of
Maryland State Team Member. The Maryland State Team is comprised of the
top 6 All-Around gymnasts at each level regardless of their age group.
Her coach Jay Barrows has this to say about Leah,
"Leah has grown in leaps and
bounds since coming to our program. Following her change to Docksiders
she has perfected numerous skills and added several more to really start
living up to her potential. Her difficulty rivals anyone in her level
nationwide, and her form and pizzazz make her fun to watch. She is now
on the right path to success." Another fun fact about Leah is that not
only is she an accomplished gymnast, she also holds the Greater
Annapolis Area Gold Record for Backstroke.
In the 13 year old age group Docksider Sarah Taylor placed 3rd on Vault with a 9.15. Leah, Sarah, and Emma Staisloff all qualified to represent Maryland and Docksiders Gymnastics at the Level 8 Regional Championships, to be held on May 2nd & 3rd at Unique Gymnastics in Waldorf, Maryland.
